In Memoriam - Ron Murphy RIP Alter Ego joins with the rest of Detroit and beyond in mourning the passing of Ron Murphy, a music mastering legend. Murphy's history is way too long and detailed to go into here, but the man had a long history as an engineer back with Motown and other Detroit soul labels before gaining international notoriety as techno's mastering master.
For those who don't know, mastering is an integral part of making vinyl records, the process that takes place between when a piece of music is "finished" by the producer and the record is made in the pressing plant. Mastering takes the music and prepares it to be duplicated, making a master copy that all other records will be pressed from. Sound frequencies that might cause a record needle to skip, making sure the record will sound loud when played, these things happen in the mastering process.
Ron not only saw that countless records sounded the way they should, he also played a key role in the creation of some of the more challenging records, ones that played in reverse, ones with "locked" grooves, and more. Where other mastering houses might be quick to say, "we don't do that," Ron was just as quick to say, "let's see what we can do." He will most definitely be missed, but he lives on whenever and wherever his records are played.
