Winner of the 2005 Heinekin StarQuest Competition as well as being featured at Judy Adams’ Discovery Series at the Jazz Café, Jazz Wagon has been noted for its energy and style. Comprised of five young men, each has been extremely active in the music scene in Detroit and beyond.
Keyboardist Jon Dixon has been playing for as long as he can remember, eventually sharing the stage with legends such as Chick Corea, the Count Basie Orchestra, and Marcus Belgrave (his mentor). Branching out, he also plays with the techno jazz band Galaxy 2 Galaxy, which featured him at the 2007 Montreux Jazz Festival.
Bassist Darell Campbell has worked with major figures in a number of genres including gospel (Clark family, Vickie Winans), R&B (Dramatics, O’Jays, WAR, Stevie Wonder, India Irie), and hip hop (D12, Obie Trice), as well as jazz (Donald Byrd, Rodney Whitaker, Delfayo Marsalis, James Carter)
Saxophonist DeSean Jones has gospel roots as well, working with Kiki Clark Sheard among others, yet his jazz foundation is solid, playing with the likes of Christian McBride, Regina Carter, and Marcus Belgrave (his mentor as well). As a featured performer with techno jazz band Galaxy 2 Galaxy, he gained sponsorship with Akai and plays the EWI (Electronic Wind Instrument) as well.
Accordionist Julien Labro hails from France, taking first place in the Coupe Mondial and the Castelfidardo Competitions as a teen. Coming to the US, he was a Magna Cum Laude Bayan Performance graduate of Wayne State University where he is currently working on his second Masters degree. He has played all across Europe and has his sights on the rest of the world.
Drummer Nate Winn has performed with a number of area artists, again from a range of genres, such as Jesse Palter and Sean Hardin. Bringing a sense of humor along with his skills has made him a valued addition to a number of projects in Detroit.
These five men came together at the prompting of Dixon and what at first began as an entertaining side project for them, has begun to become something even more enjoyable for those fortunate enough to catch them at one of their live shows here in Detroit.
