While growing up on the east side of Detroit, Danny Brown had to deal with many of the harsh realities that plagued the city. The lack of a constructive infrastructure and creative outlets in Detroit would lead him to depend on hip-hop to live.

The first influences of Danny Brown’s musical upbringing would come as a child of an African-American mother and a Pilipino father. His talent for rhyming came at a very young age as his mother would read Dr. Seuss books to him. So when he started to speak, he would talk in rhyme. His father was a house DJ and was 16 years-old when Danny was born. He would expose Danny to all the music he would spin as well as music from the likes of Roy Ayers, LL Cool J, and A Tribe Called Quest.

After growing up on hip-hop and tuning his rhyming skills in the city, Danny Brown landed the attention of a Roc-A-Fella Records A&R where soon enough Danny was out in New York recording in all the best studios on other artist’s dime. After the Roc-A-Fella situation did not pan out, Danny Brown was back in Detroit and would eventually link up with producer Nick Speed (Elzhi, 50 Cent, Talib Kweli), and the beginning of Hot Soup was set in motion.

The concept of Hot Soup represents all the sounds from Detroit including Motown, techno, soul, funk, rock to name a few, while lyrically infusing the Danny Brown’s unique style of Detroit-inspired raps. In Danny Brown’s words, “Hot Soup is just Detroit music.”
