D3 started, like most great things, as a concept. The DJ is noted for taking certain records and, using the crowd as a guide, uses the records he or she has to shape the night, to set the mood. This is not a preprogrammed set. It is improvisation based on selection and sequence. So wouldn’t it make sense to collaborate in a club setting with others who play based on improvisation? And it was out of this that the trio of DJ/percussionist Mark Flash, keyboardist Jon Dixon, and saxophonist DeSean Jones came together and formed what became known as simply “the Detroit Trio” or D3.
While each had a name in their respective areas, the Trio came together as a result of their collective work with Underground Resistance. Given the constantly shifting nature of their performance, the D3 don’t record their tracks for commercial release, instead leaving the what they do in the club, at the festival, on the plaza, where their music is ever changing and never defined. Debuting in Sao Paulo and going on to play selected dates at Detroit’s Electronic Music Festival, Berlin’s Tresor Club, and a notorious private party in Miami, the D3 take the DJ set, turn it into a live performance, and leave the clubgoers speechless.
